Importance Of Time Management In College

The biggest achievers in life are those who manage their time correctly. We all have goals and aims for our life however we don’t always manage to achieve them, often this is due to poor time management. A lack of effective time management is also a major source of stress in our lives, we may feel like were not getting anywhere in our lives and we may feel that we have so much work to do and not enough time to do it in. So, how can we learn to manage our time correctly?

1. Set your goals

It’s basic, but goal setting really is the first place to start when planning your time. Without knowing what your end goal is you’re not going to know which tasks need doing to get you there. By knowing what you want to achieve you know where to concentrate your energy and you know what distractions to avoid.

Remember to keep your goals positive, this is not the place to criticise yourself or put yourself down. “Improve my maths skills.” is much better then “Don’t make so many mistakes in calculations.”

2. Action Plans/To-Do Lists

Action plans differ from to-do lists in that action plans focus on achieving just one goal, a to-do list is a list of all the jobs you need to complete. Which you choose to do will depend on the goals you set in the last step. However the process for both are the same.

Work out what tasks you need to complete to achieve your goals. If you want to achieve your goal in the next 5 years what do you need to do in the next year to achieve it? What about the next month, week etc.?

When you have these short-term goals write down the tasks you need to do in the form of a list. Prioritize them, write A-E next to each goal depending on their importance, rewrite the list in order of importance according to the rating you just gave them. You can now work through your list from top to bottom and start reaching your end goal!

However, none of this will be as effective if we don’t set aside time to complete these tasks. We still need to manage our time to ensure we remain focused on our goal. This is where the final step comes in. Importance Of Time Management In College

3. Effective Scheduling

Scheduling is the process of looking at the time available and planning how to use it to achieve the goals you identified.

There are many items out there that can help with scheduling. Diaries, calendars notepads and MS Office to name just a few. A quick search will reveal many more, some of which are free.

There are five steps to scheduling. First, identify time for yourself, set this aside. Too much time for work will lead to you overworking yourself. This in turn will lead to an increase in your stress levels and a reduction in your efficiency. Too much time for yourself will lead to you not completing the tasks that you need to complete and therefore will also lead to an increase in stress.

Then schedule in the essential tasks, those at the very top of your to do list, the tasks that are absolutely essential and cannot be delegated to anyone else, following this set aside some time for the high priority tasks, those that are next on your to-do list. Those tasks which, although not essential, are still very important.

Since life, unfortunately, is not predictable we also need to allow time for interruptions, changes in the schedule. How much time you need for this will depend on you and your life. You will learn how much time you need for this through experience. Obviously it is impossible to predict when interruptions to your schedule will occur but scheduling time for this will allow you to rearrange your schedule when the unexpected does happen.

Finally, any time you have left is your discretionary time, that is time available for less important tasks or any other jobs that hasn’t already been scheduled in. Importance Of Time Management In College
